NBN VLAN Tag Termination Changes for Customer Routers

Creation date: 12/12/2022 4:19 PM    Updated: 12/12/2022 6:06 PM
Due to changes with the NBNCo network in recent years we are also making changes to the way we terminate your NBN connection to make things easier for all new and existing customers to connect.

These changes will require a small modification to your on-premise router equipment used to connect to the NBN Network.

From 1st February 2023 we will no longer be using a VLAN Tag (formerly VLAN Tag 100) on customer's routers NBN WAN interface.  FTTP and Fixed Wireless services should not be impacted by this change.

If you have an FTTN/FTTC or HFC NBN service our support team will be liaising with you during December and January 2022 to schedule a time to make the necessary change to your router to remove the VLAN tag so you can connect on the simplified protocol.

Your on-premise router will still require a PPPOE authenticated session with a username and password and there are no changes to these credentials.

To be ready for this change you may be able to pre-prepare your router by ensuring your device can authenticate a PPPOE session directly on the untagged interface of your routers NBN WAN port in addition to the currently tagged interface.

You may leave the tagged interface leading up to the change if that is possible for your router equipment otherwise our team will schedule a specific time for you to remove the VLAN tag on your NBN connected port.

Example: Preparing a Cisco Router

This Cisco device below has PPPOE enabled on the untagged NBN WAN interface and is associated with the existing PPP dialer interface ready to authenticate.  The tagged interface below it should remain until changeover.
