Important: After changing your account password, you must update the password in the Webvault Offsite Backup Manager software application installed on every computer or server using that backup account.
Your backup account password and your backup encryption keys are not necessarily the same.
Some older backup configurations used the account password as the encryption key when the backup was originally created.
Changing your account password does not change the encryption keys protecting your existing backups.
If your previous password was used to encrypt a backup, you MUST still retain that old password to restore historical data.
Before changing your password, we recommend securely recording your existing encryption keys and retaining any previous passwords that may have been used for backup encryption.
See our accompanying guide, Understanding and Protecting Your Backup Encryption Keys, for further information.
You can change your account password using either the Webvault backup management portal or the backup software installed on your computer.
This method allows you to change your account password without using the installed backup software.
Open the Webvault Offsite Backup Manager customer portal.
Sign in using your existing backup account credentials.
Open the User menu.
Select User Profile.
Open the Authentication tab.
Locate the Password section.
Click Reset Password.
Enter and confirm your new password.
Click Save.
Your account password will be updated. You must now complete Step 2 on every computer or server.
You can also change your password directly through Webvault Offsite Backup Manager.
Open Webvault Offsite Backup Manager on your computer.
Sign in using your existing account credentials.
Click Profile on the main screen.
Select Password from the left-hand menu.
Click Change Password.
Enter your current password and click Next.
Enter your new password.
Re-enter the new password to confirm it.
Click OK.
Click Save to apply the changes.
If your backup software has already been upgraded, the procedure is slightly different.
Open Webvault Offsite Backup Manager.
Select Profile.
Open Authentication.
Select Change/Reset Password.
Enter your current password and click Next.
Enter and confirm your new password.
Click OK, followed by Save.
We recommend choosing a password that:
Is unique to your Webvault backup account.
Contains at least 16 characters, where supported.
Is not reused for email, remote access or other online services.
Is securely stored in a password manager.
Avoid reusing a previous account password, particularly one that may have been exposed during a security incident.
This step is essential to ensure your scheduled backups continue working.
Webvault Offsite Backup Manager may store your account credentials locally so that scheduled backups can run automatically without requiring you to sign in each time. If you change your account password, other computers or servers using the same account may still have the previous password saved.
You must check and update the installed backup application on EVERY computer or server using that account.
On each computer or server:
Open Webvault Offsite Backup Manager.
If the application is already signed in, sign out to return to the login screen.
Sign in using your new account password.
If the application offers a Save Password option, ensure the new credentials are saved as appropriate for your backup configuration.
Confirm that your existing backup sets are visible.
Check that your scheduled backups remain enabled.
Verify that a backup completes successfully.
Repeat this procedure on every computer or server using the same backup account for your backups to continue successfully.
Step 3: Verify Your Backups Are Still Working
After changing your password, we recommend verifying that your backups continue to operate normally.
Open Webvault Offsite Backup Manager.
Confirm that you can sign in using your new password.
Check that your existing backup sets are visible.
Review your recent backup reports.
Confirm that the next scheduled backup completes successfully.
If multiple computers or servers use the same backup account, check that each installation continues backing up successfully.
If an installation cannot authenticate after the password change, contact Webvault Support.
If you cannot remember your current account password, you may be able to reset it using the Forgot Password option on the backup portal's login page.
Follow the instructions sent to the registered email address associated with your backup account.
If you cannot access the registered email address or are unable to reset your password, please contact Webvault Support.
Important: Resetting your account password does not recover lost backup encryption keys. If you have lost your encryption keys your backups data may be unrecoverable.
If you experience problems changing your password or your scheduled backups stop functioning, please email support@webvault.com.au or call 1300 139 927.
