Manually Configuring a Grandstream Access Point as a Slave Device for GWN Manager

Creation date: 2/12/2025 12:00 PM    Updated: 2/12/2025 12:00 PM

Purpose

This article provides steps for Webvault customers and technicians to manually configure a Grandstream GWN-series Access Point (AP) to operate as a Slave and connect to the Webvault GWN Manager.

Normally, Webvault provides a DHCP Option 43 string to automate adoption. However, if DHCP options cannot be set on the client’s router, the AP can be configured manually.

Requirements

  • A powered GWN Access Point connected to the customer’s network

  • Physical access to the device (to read MAC address & password on rear label)

  • Ability to view the customer’s DHCP leases / ARP table on their router, or scan their LAN

  • A web browser

Step 1 — Locate the MAC Address & Password

On the back of every GWN access point you will find:

  • MAC Address (used to identify the device on the network)

  • Password (used for initial login; unique per unit)

Take a clear photo or write these down.

Step 2 — Find the AP’s IP Address

You will need the IP address assigned to the access point by the customer’s router.

Option A — Check DHCP Leases on the Customer Router

  1. Log in to the router.

  2. Locate the DHCP leases or LAN clients or IP ARP table page.

  3. Search for the device using the MAC address from the back of the AP.

  4. Note the assigned IP address.

Option B — Scan the Network (if router access is limited)

You may use a MAC/IP scanning tool such as:

  • Advanced IP Scanner (Windows)

  • Angry IP Scanner (Windows/Mac/Linux)

  • Fing (Mobile device)

Scan the subnet (e.g., 192.168.1.0/24) and look for the MAC address that matches the AP.

Step 3 — Log into the Access Point

  1. Open a web browser.

  2. Enter the IP address, e.g.:

    https://192.168.1.55

  3. If prompted about an SSL certificate, proceed to continue.

  4. Log in with:

    • Username:admin

    • Password: the device password printed on the rear label.

⚠️ Critical — Select “Slave” on First Login

When logging in for the very first time, Grandstream requires you to choose whether the device is a Master or Slave.

You must select: Slave

If you accidentally choose Master, the AP will automatically configure itself as a standalone controller and cannot be adopted by Webvault’s GWN Manager.

To fix this, you must factory reset the device:

  • Hold the reset button for 30 seconds,

  • Release,

  • Wait for reboot and reattempt login.

Step 4 — Configure GWN Manager Settings

Once logged in as Slave:

  1. Go to Basic Settings.

  2. Locate GWN Management Server Address and enable it.

  3. Enter the Webvault GWN Manager server:

    gwn.webvault.com.au

  4. Leave DHCP Option Override enabled.

  5. Click Save.

The AP will reboot or reconnect to attempt adoption by the controller.

Step 5 — Provide Details to Webvault Support

To complete adoption into the correct customer network within GWN Manager, send Webvault Support:

  • AP MAC Address

  • Device Password

  • Customer name / site and network details

Webvault technicians will then adopt the device into the designated wireless network group.
