Wi‑Fi Support for Polycom VVX Series USB Capable Phones

Creation date: 23/07/2025 11:19 PM    Updated: 23/07/2025 11:21 PM

Overview & Recommendation

WebVault strongly recommends using physical Ethernet cabling to ensure optimal call quality and reliability. However, for situations where Ethernet isn't feasible, Wi‑Fi via USB dongles can be used as a temporary solution to enable internet connectivity on Polycom phones with a USB port.

Supported Adapters

🟩 Edimax EW‑7811UTC AC600 USB Adapter (Dual‑Band 2.4/5 GHz)

  • Tested by WebVault and confirmed fully compatible.

  • Connects into the USB port on VVX phones (except VVX1500).

  • Works on dual-band (2.4 GHz & 5 GHz) with WPA/WPA2 security.

  • Requires Firmware 5.8.3 or higher.

🟩 Poly/Obihai OBiWiFi5G USB Adapter (Dual‑Band 802.11ac)

  • Officially supported by Polycom/HP for VVX models with USB and firmware 5.8.0 or higher.

  • Supports VVX 250/350/450 and also VVX 401/501/601.

  • Offers secure wireless with WPA/WPA2 and Enterprise 802.1x support.

  • Dual-band ensures better performance; can be configured via the phone interface.

  • Known limitations: No USB headset support during use & Cannot run Wi‑Fi and Ethernet simultaneously. Video calling and IPv6 not supported over Wi‑Fi.

Firmware & Compatibility Requirements

  • Minimum Firmware: UC Software 5.8.0 is required for Wi‑Fi functionality to appear. Full support requires:

    • Edimax: 5.8.3 or later

    • OBiWiFi5G: 5.8.0 or later (ideally 5.9.1 or 6.0)

  • Unsupported Models:

    • VVX1500 does not support Wi‑Fi dongles.

    • CCX350/400/500 are also unsupported.

  • Security:

    • Supports WPA/WPA2 Personal and Enterprise methods (EAP‑PEAP/MS‑CHAPv2, EAP‑FAST, EAP‑TLS).

WIFI Setup Instructions

  1. Verify firmware version on your VVX via Settings > Status > Version.

  2. Insert the dongle (Edimax or OBiWiFi5G) into a USB port on the back of the phone.

  3. When prompted, select Start and then enable Wi‑Fi; the phone will reboot.

  4. After reboot, navigate to Settings > Basic > Wi‑Fi:

    • The phone scans and lists available Wi‑Fi networks.

    • Choose your SSID and enter credentials.

  5. Confirm the connection. A Wi‑Fi icon appears on the home screen.

  6. Note: Ethernet must be disabled manually if both connections are active.

Limitations & Best Practices

  • Temporary use only: Wireless is suitable only in strong, stable networks.

  • No dual connectivity: Ethernet is disabled when Wi‑Fi is active.

  • Audio/video constraints: No video support; USB headsets disabled when Wi‑Fi dongle is in use.

  • Signal strength matters: Ensure excellent signal to avoid call issues.

  • Enterprise support: Enterprise security (802.1x) is supported.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Ensure firmware is current.

  • If the dongle is not detected, reboot the phone and reinsert it.

  • To reset credentials, go to Settings > Wi‑Fi > Forget, then reconnect.

  • For debugging, WLAN logs can be enabled in the phone's web interface.

  • Revert to wired Ethernet if call quality suffers over Wi‑Fi.
