Duo Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) provides an extra layer of security when accessing remote desktop servers and other applications. While many users are familiar with Duo Push notifications, some applications require authentication via a passcode instead. This guide explains how to use Duo Mobile passcodes to authenticate successfully.
Duo Mobile passcodes are a one-time-use numeric code generated within the Duo Mobile app. Unlike Duo Push notifications, which send a prompt to your mobile device for approval, passcodes require you to manually retrieve and enter them. Passcodes may be more secure than push notifications because a user cannot accidentally approve an authentication request.
If you need to authenticate using a Duo Mobile passcode, follow these steps:
On your Apple (iOS) or Android device, open the Duo Mobile application.
Within the Duo Mobile app, locate the application you are trying to authenticate with (e.g., "Remote Desktop Server").
Tap the entry for the application to reveal a six-digit passcode.
Enter this passcode in the authentication prompt on your remote desktop or application login screen.
If the passcode you entered is not accepted:
Refresh the Passcode: Passcodes are one-time use, meaning if you’ve recently used a passcode, it will no longer be valid. Simply tap the application entry in Duo Mobile again to generate a new passcode.
Check Your Device's Time Settings: Ensure your mobile device has the correct time and date settings, as an incorrect clock can affect passcode validity.
Verify That You Are Using the Correct Application Entry: Ensure you are selecting the correct application within Duo Mobile that corresponds to your authentication request.
