Expanding a Partition on Windows Server After Increasing Storage Volume

When your underlying storage volume has been expanded, you need to extend your partition to utilize the additional space. This guide walks you through extending a partition, such as the C:\ drive, using Windows Disk Manager.

Prerequisites

  • Ensure that the storage volume has already been expanded at the hardware or cloud level.

  • Confirm that your Windows Server has administrative privileges.

Steps to Extend a Partition Using Disk Management

  1. Access Disk Management

    • Press Win + R, type diskmgmt.msc, and hit Enter.

    • This opens the Disk Management tool, which provides an overview of all attached drives and partitions.

  2. Identify the Target Drive

    • Locate the partition you want to extend (e.g., C:\).

    • Ensure that there is unallocated space next to the partition you wish to expand.

  3. Extend the Partition

    • Right-click the partition (e.g., C:\) and select Extend Volume.

    • The Extend Volume Wizard will open. Click Next.

    • The available unallocated space should be automatically selected. If necessary, adjust the size you want to add.

    • Click Next, then Finish to apply the changes.

  4. Verify the Expansion

    • Once the process completes, the partition should reflect the new total size.

    • You can confirm this by checking This PC (File Explorer > This PC) or by reopening Disk Management.

Troubleshooting

  • Extend Volume Option is Greyed Out?

    • This occurs if the unallocated space is not contiguous to the partition you want to extend. You may need to use a third-party tool or command-line utilities such as diskpart.

  • Rescan Disks

    • If the newly added space is not appearing, open Disk Management, click on Action in the menu bar, and select Rescan Disks. This forces Windows to re-detect available storage and may resolve visibility issues.

By following these steps, you can efficiently expand your Windows Server partition to fully utilize the additional storage space.  Please contact Webvault customer support if you have any difficulties.
